Discus
If your technique of throwing puts a high spin on the discus then you will benefit from a high spin (high moment) discus (the weight distribution is greater to the rim) which is more stable in flight if spinning fast. To discover which discus will suit you best, place two small pieces of coloured tape on the rim opposite each other. Have a few throws and look carefully at the rim of the discus as it flies. If the rim appears to be one colour of tape, then you will benefit from a high moment discus. If the rim appears patchy then you will get better distances using a low moment discus.
Sides??
The high moment discus have much lighter (and thinner sides). Aluminium sides do not crack when hit on the cage uprights but may be distorted and dented. Solid wood sides, being of natural wood may not be well balanced (but the weight will be accurate), and laminated wood sides will be much more reliable in balance of flight. Steel rims are harder than brass and will be less damaged hitting the cage. However many throwers think brass feels better! Replacement plates are available for some discus.
